LGBTQIA+ Health: Advocacy

The GMLA has worked with other LGBT rights organizations on marriage equality and the successful repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell." As a joint project with the Human Rights Campaign Foundation, the GMLA created the Healthcare Equality Index (HEI), which surveys specific hospital policies in several areas: patient non-discrimination, hospital visitation, decision making, cultural competency training for hospital staff, and hospital employment policies.

Recent projects of this national coalition for LGBT health research, policy, programs and services have included LGBT inclusion in Healthy People 2020 and in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA), hospital visitation rights, and LGBT health data collection.

NCLR supports LGBT rights through litigation, public policy advocacy, and public education in areas such as marriage equality, parenting, relationship protections, reproductive rights, youth, immigration, aging, transgender law, and employment. The very useful website provides extensive legal information, downloadable publications on a wide range of LGBT legal issues, and a legal and referral helpline.

Formerly known as the International Gay & Lesbian Human Rights Commission (IGLHRC), Outright Action International monitors international LGBTQI issues and coordinates responses.

A constituency organization of the AFL-CIO which seeks to mobilize mutual support between the organized labor movement and the LGBT community for social and economic justice.
