Data Storage Guidance

  1. Follow the 3-2-1 rule: keep three copies of your data, on two types of media, in at least one offsite location.
  2. Organize and clearly label stored data so they are easy to locate and physically accessible
  3. Make backups of your data and check them often to make sure the backup copies are accessible (CrashPlan Pro is the UCSF enterprise backup solution)
  4. Don't forget to make backup copies of physical notes or notebooks

Data Storage Options

UCSF has several data storage options. When thinking about where to store your data consider the size of your data, whether it contains PHI, whether you have funding, and who will need to access it.
