Software at UCSF - Atlas.ti
The Library offers access to ATLAS.ti, qualitative data analysis software designed to help manage and analyze non-numerical data such as text, video, audio, and graphics. The program provides tools that let the user locate, code, and annotate findings in primary data material, to weigh and evaluate their importance, and to visualize complex relations between them.
ATLAS.ti is available to the UCSF community in two modes:
- Via windows computers at the Parnassus Library and Medical Sciences 165 (see list of Library software)
- Via the UCSF RAE secure computing platform
Free or Low-cost Software
- Dedoose - $Dedoose is a robust online platform for analyzing qualitative and mixed methods data. It costs $15/month for individual users but you only pay for the months that you use it so it can be relatively inexpensive. Note that Dedoose cannot be used with P3/P4 data as it does not meet UC data breach liability insurance requirements .
- OpenRefineFree and open source tool for cleaning messy datasets. Especially great for survey and mixed methods data with typos and inconsistent formatting. The UCSF Library has an online tutorial for OpenRefine.
- QcoderLightweight free and open source R programming package to conduct qualitative coding.
- QualCoderA free desktop application for QDA that can be used to code Text, Images, and Audio Visual materials.
- TaguetteTaguette is a free and open-source tool for qualitative research. You can import your research materials, highlight and tag quotes, and export the results! Note that UCSF researchers should use the local version rather than the server version for P3/P4 data.
