Citation management software

You use citation/reference management software to collect, store, and manage references. It works with your word processing software when you are writing a paper or manuscript so that you can easily manage in-text citations and produce correctly formatted bibliographies.

Classes at the UCSF Library

Getting Started with EndNote

This hands-on class covers everything you need to get started using EndNote: creating and adding references to an EndNote library, inserting citations into a Word document, working with PDFs, and formatting a bibliography in your chosen journal style. We currently teach EndNote version X5.0.

Getting Started with RefWorks

This hands-on class covers everything you need to get started using RefWorks: creating an account, adding references to a RefWorks library, inserting citations into a Word document, and formatting a bibliography in your chosen journal style. [UCSF faculty, staff, and students only]

EndNote/RefWorks Comparison

EndNote

RefWorks

Access Endnote must be installed on your computer. However, users have access to EndNote Web, a stripped down online version of EndNote. Web-based, making it fully "portable." You install the Write-n-Cite plugin to create bibliographies with MS Word. If you wish you can also download your references to a computer and work offline.
Ease of Use More fully-featured than RefWorks so slightly more difficult to use. Simpler than EndNote and easier to learn.
Cost Individual must purchase own copy. Free to UCSF students, staff and faculty. Create an account here. After graduation, UCSF alumni can retain account.
